Happy Zombie

This was one of my "back-up" bags. It was deemed "potentially inappropriate" and thus never made the trip to kindergarten (I think we put it to use carrying toys on a road trip or some such).

Pedro Kitteh part 2

Gave Pedro another shot. Still with the ears. Don't know what my deal is. It's hard to erase marker.

Spongebob Squarebag

I thought I was being pretty clever here. G was not amused. Apparently, he had recently watched an episode in which Spongebob's antics offended him.

Technically, "Batape".

My little brony

Another victim of post-schoolday photo syndrome.

My little brony loves Pinkie Pie ("because she's silly"). I'm betting in a year or two, he'll ask me to bear in mind children's teasing habits before I put characters he loves on his bags.

Pedro Kitteh

"Love" is too mild a word to express how G feels about Pedro (our cat. Full name: Madame Pedro Pedro Kitteh Colfax the Third Esquire Warrior Princess). So I thought I'd try pushing myself for this bag. In the future, I'd learn to spend a little more time on the proportions of the initial sketch (look at those ears). I'm sure I still blew my half hour limit, sloppy proportions and all. But it did inform me as to just how far I might be able to get in (around) half an hour.

And a close up, because the internet loves kittens. Even large-eared ones.

Ancient Martian mating ritual

Sadly, my son did not appreciate the random silliness of this bag as much as I did.

Thomas the Tank Engine

Wasn't really happy with the way this one turned out. So the damaged state feels justified to me.

Kermit

There was only one bag in year one that I failed to get a picture of – the much-more-detailed-than-this Fozzy Bear.

The Lorax

Sometimes I phone it in. This may have been one of those times.

Woo-hoo!

I don't do originals often. Mostly because of my half hour limit. I hope to push myself a little more on that in the coming year.

Batman

Batman got a little roughed up. Gotham's got nothing on kindergarten lunch rooms.

Ford monster truck

End of week one, I took my first request. G wanted not just a truck, not just a monster truck, but specifically a Ford monster truck.

Though probably born out of his love for all things auto, I secretly suspect he was going out of his way to make me play to my weaknesses. This is also my first attempt at something pseudo-realistic in my half-hour time budget (that I'm pretty sure I  went over).

Cookie Monster

Om nom nom nom!

In the beginning, I had a very limited color pallet. I was working with just a few old, not yet dried out beryl markers and borrowed the kids' crayola markers. Eventually, I bought myself some new art markers to flesh out the pallet and give me some subtlety to work with.

Cartoon boy running

I'll be posting "year one" bags in the order that they went to school (more or less). In the beginning, this was not always the order they in which they where created. I built up a good cushion before the school year started, in case I didn't have time or energy to draw a new one on any given day.

Day one - Lightning McQueen

This was the bag for day one. I went past my half hour time limit. Also, didn't think about snapping a photo before G took off for school. The bag was in poor shape when it came home. So the pic was rigged onto a new bag.

In the beginning...

Last year, my son Grayson started kindergarten. I had seen a blog or three by other dads (why no moms, I wonder) doing lunch bag art. And although I'm remarkable poor at persisting at things that require steady, regular effort, I said "I'm going to try this. It would be a nice little tradition. I can do this. Maybe not as good as this guy, but still, I should at least try. Besides, it will give me motivation to do some drawing, which I enjoy but rarely take time for myself to do"

Much to my surprise, I did lunch bag art for my son through the whole year. My son opting for hot lunch two days a week helped. Three bags a week, about half an hour per day (that was a self-imposed rule--to keep keep me from the excuse "I don't have time"). Sometimes I phoned it in, other times I took maybe an hour. Never more than that, though. I enjoyed it. He enjoyed it. By years end, I discovered others at his school where enjoying it, too.

Never did get around to the blogging part of the endeavor, though. So now I'm playing catch up. And I'm going to have to catch up pretty quick. Because Grayson starts 1st grade in a few weeks. And his little sister, Talia, starts Kindergarten. Twice the fun. Enjoy.
